Light Magic Winter 2018

Whether you're clinging on to the last days of your summer evenings or digging out your favourite wooly jumper. It's difficult to ignore the fact that Autumn is quickly creeping in. I know it too- i've been designing winter products since the beginning of August. As I prepare for my first Winter (and Christmas) running my own business, I want to share some insights with you.

Whilst i've been thinking about the bits of winter that I truly love- it mainly revolves around food. Thinking about the Oktoberfest, 'German Markets,' family gatherings and work parties. I could get lost thinking about the hot chocolate possibilities, the crepes and the garlic potatoes on offer. Wrapping yourself up far too tight in your favourite hat and scarf for the voyage into town to your favourite shops (forgetting they all have the heating on full blast) or snuggling under your favourite blanket with a good film (and more food- obviously).

Although many families in the UK adore Christmas and all it has to offer, I love the lead up to such an exciting time. I've made the conscious decision not to include any Christmas related terms on my Winter products. I feel like this way it includes many of my friends that don't celebrate Christmas but who do enjoy the markets and festivities of winter, it includes those who have birthday's in the winter months who enjoy my illustrations as well as my greetings cards doubling up as great party invites!
I think there's a whole magical element to winter that also needs to be celebrated, especially for those who choose an alternative 'Christmas' or those who can't make it home for Christmas day.

I decided to name my latest collection 'Light Magic' in name of the magical moments that happen throughout winter, also for the magic in my characters taking on more human roles. I decided to use animals instead of humans in my illustrations to connect them more to my university work of animals and bird heads with human-like bodies. They become slightly more relatable than just animals but add a sense of character that us humans can relate to.
